23 May Let’s Do Some Yoga
If you would have told me I’d be starting up my own yoga studio a month ago I would have said you were crazy.
The fact is, I was 1000% happy teaching at the studio I had taught at for the past five years here in Fort Worth. But when the owners decided to permanently close the doors to all three of their studios, I quickly discovered a void within that I knew was not just within myself, but within our entire yoga community… teachers and students alike. We had nowhere to go, and we were all looking forward to practicing in person again very soon.
The online virtual classes, for many of us, were just a means to an end. We saw them as a way to keep practicing with our favorite teachers until the studios reopened.
There are elements of a yoga class that just cannot be recreated in a virtual manner. The connection. The energy. The accountability. The community.
This was all blatantly staring me in the face immediately and it did not take long (about two days of being sad) before my burning desire to take action took over.
I entered creation mode for two straight weeks, glued to my computer, and thanks to my branding and design skills and experience, I was able to whip up and launch The Studio in just two weeks… a website and online platform for live stream + pop-up classes in Fort Worth. A platform built to support my end goal: a studio space of my very own. A place for all of us, and the greater Fort Worth community at large, to continue this practice that has changed our lives for the better.
A quick bit about the name. The Studio actually came to me a long time ago. I have said for years, as a dancer and then yoga teacher, “I’m going to the studio.” I don’t know how many times I have said that, but I know I’ve said it a lot. The Studio feels perfect to me because it points to the space itself. A space for me. A space for you. A space for us. To grow, heal, feel, get strong, get empowered, cry, move through the muck, and connect with likeminded people interested in doing the same. We come together and we grow together. We don’t have to do life alone. Even when you’re having a shitty day and you go to a yoga class, you’ve got your hood on, maybe you’ve been crying all day, and you don’t even speak one word to the teacher or other yogis around you… but you get yourself to your mat and somehow the energy in the room magically lifts you back up and you leave holding your head a little higher, feeling a little lighter.
There is an unspoken language when people come together to practice yoga. A communication with no words. An intuitive knowing of one another, an acknowledgement of each other. The I See You. You See Me. We are here together. We are equals. We are One. That is what we really value as yogis. Sure, we can do home practice, alone, and it can be tremendously gratifying and feel good and we can advance in the physical asanas. But there is something about coming together. Community. That language that does not require words.
So, we need a studio. And my aim is to get through the summer with these pop-up classes, build momentum, and open up our space early fall in Fort Worth. Clearly with the whole climate around the pandemic, things may change and shift, but as of now, this is what I have my heart set on.
Finally, having suddenly stepped into a leadership role has brought me a whole new bag of stuff to sift through. Of course it feels extremely natural and I have not once questioned what I am doing. I know it’s all in alignment because I have not met one ounce of resistance through this process. My team of beautiful yoga teachers fell right into place and the energy that has been born through our team meeting calls and preparation to launch our full class schedule on Monday, May 25th has got me feeling all the woman-power-sisterhood feels. You guys, this team of yoga teachers is incredible. These are passionate women with a burning desire to make an impact on the world in their own unique ways, and I am so incredibly blessed to have each of them on board.
We cannot wait to share yoga with you. Our online offerings will go for four weeks so each of us has a chance to connect with yogis weekly who are not ready to practice in person yet. Our pop-up classes are for those ready to practice in person and this is our main focus that we plan to carry all the way through the summer in preparation for The Studio’s permanent home.
